Ella Fengler
1999, Amsterdam

I am an artist based in Amsterdam who portrays stories in video, textiles, and print. My work stems from a deep interest in how humans and different world cultures manifest themselves in objects, poetic language, music, dance, and rituals. The expressions of identity that I research and create have mythical connotations and seek a connection to nature.

I use raw materials such as chalk, clay, or the body in my working process to create worlds in which different media can merge. These worlds reveal sensitive perspectives. Details of small-scale stories that hint at bigger ones.

Een liefdesspel & Een klein kooitje

This diptych tells the story of the Surinamese bird sport, practiced in Surinam as well as in the Netherlands. It shows the love these men have for the birds and the sport and how this is expressed in their serious dedication and following of the rules. (The video is entirely made of found footage)

Vrijheid zit

(van) binnen -

de oranje huiskamer

A warm summer night in an orange living room. There are no obligations or limitations, and no one is watching. This realization makes us listen to our impulsive desires. Carefree, a search for adventure takes place in the small space. And beyond, in the imagination.

Likambo ya ngana

The origin and meaning of the Congolese song Likambo ya ngana by Franco Luambo, freely translated as ‘other people’s stuff', are initially unknown to me. It became one of my favorites as I listened to it to calm down before falling asleep. To be able to appreciate it in its entirety, I immersed myself in both the piece of music and the Congolese culture. The masks of the Kuba, meant to transmit cultural values, brought me to the core of this process. Because of the symbolic appearances, such as large ears and blindness, the representation of the role of the common man and the often attributed characteristic of rebellion, I became inspired by the mask Bwoom. In Bwoom, I recognise Franco Luambo, who upset the regime with his music. I also encounter myself and my background, struggling to try to understand other cultures.

Uma Gringa Na Favela

In collabaration with Isabelle Hart

A portrait of my best friend Isabelle, in may 2020. She lives in favela Babilonia, Rio de Janeiro. She becomes acquainted with the Brazilian culture and the community more and more. And even plays her part, but there will always remain a distance. Among the cariocas she will always be a gringa. Footage of Isabelle in her living space in the favela is combined with her experiences as a gringa (foreigner).

Part of ABRI Magazine
ABRI is a project in which 33 graphic design students cover various aspects of tourism. We started in January 2020 and halfway through the process the perspective on our research field drastically changed by the sudden arrival of COVID-19. What does tourism entail when there are lockdowns all over the globe?

In practical matters the project changed as well, a physical exhibition was no longer possible. In consultation with AG (Academie Galerie, University of Arts Utrecht) we chose to present our results in a magazine. In these times of distance we wanted to share our visualized thoughts via a tangible medium. From the content, production, sales and distribution to a corresponding website and communication, we took care of the entire process. Each copy of ABRI magazine is different and contains a unique selection of nine posters. This way you could create a small private exhibition. The magazine also includes a code that gives you access to the ABRI website where you can view all 33 projects.

Mythologies of WeedsThe installation Mythologies of weeds, and interruptions between the paving is a tribute to weeds. Six plants (nettle, horsetail, thistle, clover, bindweed and dandelion) that are often considered ‘undesirable’ are assigned to new myths to reintroduce the spirit of nature in the city. In the photo and video projection, new narratives emerge about our relationships to nature. The hand-woven fabrics honor the fickleness of the six plants. Fragile yet vigorous. Stinging yet soft. Contrasting yet merging.

De bezielde tuin‘De bezielde tuin’ is a metaphorical quest for connection to nature. In the essay, elements from my own living environment, connecting me to nature or separating me from it, merge into zoomed-in reflections on how art can contribute to our relationship to nature.
Attached is the photo series Interruptions between the paving, in which I embrace the weeds in my neighborhood.

Gedachtendans

I am the director of my dreams, of my inner thoughts. Even though in this world some things are unfamiliar or not how they’re supposed to be. I am the owner of these objects unchained from their usual role. In the performances on location I embrace a new balance between me, the objects and their meaning. My voice describes the meanings I gathered in my dreams. It’s not about defining but rather about the beauty of the incomprehensible, being unable to define.
